What to consider when those autumn evenings start to draw in

Summer is gone and the Autumn has come with cooler days , the leaves are changing colour and darker nights are fast approaching. Fireworks and Halloween are coming and as fun as they are for us it proves a challenging and often anxious and scary time for some of our dogs.

With so much change and so much to explore , making sure we provide the ability to explore the season to its fullest but in the safest way possible can be daunting.

We have provided some guidance in this article to assist but we always recommend seeking the advice of your vet should have any concerns regarding the health and welfare of your dog.

1. Exercise: As the temperatures fall and the weather changes, adjust the length of the walk rather being tempted to stay in the warm! Consider a natural joint supplement.
2. Diet: Is your dog exercising less? Adjust their diet accordingly but be sure to consult your vet for the right amount. Remember to keep highly toxic treats such as chocolate and other treats away from your pet.
3. Plants: Autumn is beautiful and famous for trees dropping their leaves and seeds, some trees and plants are poisonous to dogs. Horse Chestnut, Yew Trees are poisonous. Acorns and conkers pose a choking and blockage hazard. Be vigilant.
4. Fleas and ticks: Summer is prevalent for ticks and fleas, it is important during the autumn season to continue treatments to prevent any infestations!
5. Pumpkins: Pumpkins are everywhere in the autumn and while they are not poisonous to dogs, if consumed in large quantities it can lead to a an icky tummy!
6. Halloween: Halloween can be very stressful for many of our pets, dogs in particular, scary costumes, lots of visions, loud noises etc. Give your dog somewhere safe to be during this time and even though they may look adorable please refrain from dressing up your dog if they appear to be anxious.
7. Fireworks: Fireworks start from Early October to New year and make life very stressful for a lot of wildlife, horse, the elderly, dogs and alike. There are a lot of things that can be done to reduce the stress for your dog; build a safe space, walk earlier, close curtains, play music, etc. If you need any help please contact us.
8. Safety: Please check your dog’s micro chip details are correct and up to date. It is a legal requirement, ALL cats and dogs must be microchipped by 10th June 2024 or face a fine. If your dog gets spooked and is found, having the correct details will mean that you are reunited!
